While serving as a reconnaissance team leader, He deployed his team into an ambush position. His team came under intense fire from two numerically superior enemy elements. Disregarding his own personal safety, he purposely exposed himself to the enemy fire to allow the rest his team time to establish a defensive position. Despite two serious wounds, he continued to fight and call in evacuation helicopters for the team. He was unable to be rescued due to a mortal wound.
